Matthias James Pottery Studio and Gallery

Matthias and his wife, Lisa, began participating in art shows in 1995. His works are now displayed and sold throughout the Midwest at art shows and galleries.  Over the years, Matthias has received many awards. These awards are based originality, creativity, and aesthetics.

During the fall of 1997, Matthias and Lisa moved from St. Paul, Minnesota,  to Evansville, Wisconsin, near Madison, relocating their studio.  Their new location , just on the edge of Evansville is home to the newly renovated studio.  In 1999, they opened their gallery, giving customers the opportunity to  view the studio with pieces in process, and  have the opportunity to purchase finished work.

Matthias's view of art is simple and focused.  He sees art a celebration, whether it is in words, music, painting or clay. Art for him, is a process of " putting together" with things that are already created.  The celebration comes in the mystery of the final product.

The art I produce is functional and nonfunctional pottery. The medium and materials I use in producing the pottery are first a high fire stoneware clay rich with Iron, secondly a variety of high fire glazes that produce: reds, blues, browns, blacks, greens and whites.

The processes/techniques are first throwing the piece on an electric wheel, after the clay has dried completely, I proceed with a bisque firing to cone 07, about1700 degrees.  Then I will use the variety of high fire glazes on the surfaces of the bisque ware by pouring and overlapping the glazes to get a breaking and mixing affect.

I then stack the pottery in a 90 cubic foot gas kiln and do a reduction firing (that is reducing the oxygen in the kiln at around 1700 degrees and then continue raising the heat to 2300 degrees when the glazes vitrify to the clay (Melt). The final firing takes 24 hours plus cool down time.

Matthias's pottery is made entirely by hand; most of the work is thrown on the potters wheel, others pieces are created by hand with slab clay.  Each piece is hand signed on the back.  All pottery is made from high quality stoneware and fired to a temperature of 2380 degrees.  Each piece is entirely lead-free, oven proof, microwave and dishwasher safe.

On March 15, 2000 Matthias and Lisa celebrated the birth of their son Elijah Aaron.  On October 29, 2002 Cassiah Elizabeth was born.
