  Servanthood

In commemoration of this day, Friday, the 20th of April 2001; the ground breaking of Evansville's new Senior High School, I have chosen the piece entitled Servanthood.   Servanthood; A foot washing basin and pitcher created from stoneware clay is a venerable utilitarian ware that was commonly used to wash the feet of visitors coming in to the homes in the ancient Middle East.  The washing of feet was done by a servant of the home and was the most humble of chores a servant would do through out the day; it was expected and done without complaint.

The foot washing would do two things: first it was a sanitary issue, as often visitors had traveled long distances on dirt roads with only sandals on their feet and their feet would be coated with dirt from the roads. Second, it would bring comfort to the visitor whose feet would be sore from the traveling and allow them to relax and be refreshed form the long trip.

The washing of the feet symbolic of service and humility; two virtues that apply to many parts of life; government, citizenship, neighborliness and one of life's noblest activities; education.  We, as a community are called to serve each other with humility; it is expected of us as politicians, citizens, neighbors, parents, children, students and teachers.

This gesture of the foot washing set,  Servanthood; a gift to the students and teachers at Evansville High School; our community, is a reminder that we are all students and to foster willingness to serve with humility out of love for one another.
